Chapter 7: The Glitch in the Cloak
A minor, yet alarming, anomaly occurs: a fleeting flicker in Planet 9's carefully maintained invisibility, a brief 'detection event' that sends ripples of panic through the Academy. Scholars scramble to identify the source, suspecting everything from a rogue Terran probe to an unforeseen consequence of their own research. Jynx's fascination with a forbidden Terran poem is inadvertently linked to the anomaly, raising suspicion. The Administrator, a figure of immense authority and enigmatic presence, takes a keen, unsettling interest.
The silence of the Outer Archives was usually a balm, a carefully curated symphony of hushed hums and the soft rustle of data-slates. Xylar K’tharr, Head Archivist and architect of Planet 9’s ‘Terran Threat Data’ repository, found solace in its predictable quietude. “Report,” Xylar’s voice, usually a low, resonant rumble, was sharp, cutting through the archive’s gentle drone. They did not look up from the holographic display currently depicting the intricate, terrifyingly mundane social rituals of Terran ‘birthday parties.’ Small, brightly colored flags stuck into inflated dough-globes. The potential for bio-contamination from shared utensils alone was staggering.
