The worn leather of the library armchair creaked softly as Noah shifted, the afternoon sun slanting through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet air. He traced the intricate scrollwork on the armrest, a nervous habit he’d picked up in the last few weeks. Emma sat across from him, her sketchpad open, pencil poised, but her gaze was fixed on him, a gentle question in her deep brown eyes. They had fallen into a rhythm, these stolen hours between classes, a quiet sanctuary carved out of the usual high school chaos. It was a fragile peace, one Noah was terrified of shattering.
“So,” Emma began, her voice a soft murmur, barely disturbing the library’s hushed reverence. “You’ve been… quiet. More than usual, even.”
Noah’s breath hitched. He’d been so careful, so meticulously guarded, building walls higher than any fortress. Yet, here she was, seeing through them, or at least, sensing the cracks. “Just… a lot to process,” he managed, his voice a little rough. “New school, new everything.”
