The library, normally Noah’s sanctuary of solitude, was becoming something else entirely. It was the place where the quiet hum of turning pages was occasionally punctuated by Emma’s soft laughter, a sound that had, against his better judgment, begun to weave itself into the fabric of his days. He’d found himself lingering longer, his study sessions stretching out, a subtle gravitational pull drawing him to her corner table. Today, she was sketching in a worn notebook, her brow furrowed in concentration, a stray curl of auburn hair falling across her cheek. He watched her for a moment, a familiar ache settling in his chest, the echo of a past he desperately tried to outrun.

He’d always found solace in books, in the predictable order of chapters and the silent companionship of characters. But Emma was an anomaly. She didn't fit into his carefully constructed world of detachment. She was a splash of vibrant color in his monochrome existence. He’d started bringing his lunch to the library, a concession to his own burgeoning curiosity, and found himself strategically choosing a table within her sightline. He’d learned to recognize the way she chewed on the end of her pencil when she was deep in thought, the little sigh of contentment when a sketch finally came together.

One afternoon, as he was packing up his trigonometry textbook, a small, folded piece of paper landed on his table. He looked up, startled, to find Emma offering a shy, apologetic smile.

“Sorry,” she whispered, her voice a gentle breeze. “My pencil rolled. I think it was trying to escape.”

He picked up the paper. It was a quick, charcoal sketch of a grumpy-looking pigeon, its chest puffed out defiantly. Beneath it, in neat, looping script, were the words: "He demands more crumbs."
