The air in Noah’s small apartment, usually thick with the comforting scent of old books and Emma’s faint floral perfume, suddenly felt thin, sharp. It was late afternoon, the kind of golden hour that usually bathed their shared space in a warm, hopeful glow. Today, though, the light seemed to mock them, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the tense silence. Emma sat perched on the edge of the worn sofa, her knuckles white where she gripped the armrest, her gaze fixed on the phone in her lap as if it were a venomous snake. Noah stood by the window, his back to her, his shoulders rigid, the familiar weight of the world pressing down on him once more.

“They found her,” Emma finally whispered, her voice a fragile thread that barely broke the quiet. “My aunt. She… she’s gone.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.
