Chapter 10
A Smudged Landscape
The Antagonist actively interferes, smudging a beautiful forest Ren drew. The vibrant greens turn to murky grays. The characters feel the loss of color and life keenly.
The forest had been Ren’s masterpiece, a riot of emerald greens and sun-dappled golds that hummed with a life all its own. Each leaf had been rendered with a care that bordered on reverence, each shaft of light a tiny, perfect brushstroke. Coco had been particularly delighted with it, her written words fluttering like little birds through the whispering branches. Bobo, ever the observer, had found a quiet nook beneath an ancient oak, his presence a gentle anchor in the vibrant scene. But now, a creeping unease settled over the page, a chill that had nothing to do with the painted breeze.
It started subtly, a faint blurring at the edges of Ren’s vision, a feeling like smudged charcoal on the back of their eyelids. The color didn’t fade; it curdled, transforming into a dull, muddy gray, as if a giant, unseen hand had swept across the page, smearing the carefully crafted hues into an indistinguishable mess.
A gasp escaped Coco’s lips, sharp and sudden. She had been tracing the path of a particularly iridescent butterfly, her finger hovering just above the paper, when the vibrant green it was about to land upon dissolved into a sickly, lifeless tone. “Ren! What’s happening?” Her voice, usually so bright and full of wonder, was laced with a tremor of fear.
