Elder Maeve, her eyes like ancient pools reflecting the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, stood at the edge of the Great Clearing. Her gaze was fixed not on the assembled warriors, their faces etched with a mixture of grim determination and nervous anticipation, but on the distant, shimmering heat haze that marked the border.
Chieftain Borin stood beside her, his broad shoulders hunched, the weight of his people pressing down on him. He clasped and unclasped his hands, a nervous tic that Maeve had come to recognize. Kaelen, lean and coiled like a spring, paced at the front of the warrior ranks, his hand never far from the hilt of his spear. His eyes, dark and stormy, darted between Maeve and the approaching threat, a silent challenge to her counsel of patience. Anya, her movements graceful and deliberate, moved among the gathered people, her basket filled with herbs emitting a faint, calming scent. Her gaze, often meeting Maeve’s with a shared understanding, now held a flicker of unease.
