The apartment felt suddenly too small, the beige walls of their rented sanctuary seeming to press inward, the air thick with unspoken accusations that vibrated just beneath the threshold of hearing. Rene knelt by the window, pressing her forehead against the cool glass, tracing the outline of the fire escape with a trembling finger. The city below continued its oblivious rush—a stream of anonymous faces going about their mandated routines—but to Rene, every passing car seemed to slow, every pedestrian glanced upward with undue interest.

“They know,” she whispered, the words tasting like ash on her tongue.

Dion, across the room, didn't look up from the door. He was meticulously running his fingertips over the deadbolt, then the secondary chain lock, then the small, barely visible scratch near the peephole. He had been doing this for nearly an hour, a rhythmic, obsessive check that had both soothed and frayed Rene’s nerves in equal measure over the past six months. Now, it only amplified the noise in her head.
