The air in Jean’s small studio felt thick with unspoken words, a tangible weight pressing down on her chest. The vibrant hues of her paints seemed muted, the canvases staring back at her with an accusatory silence. The argument with Hana, though brief, had left a residue of anxiety that clung to her like a damp shroud. Hana’s worried voice echoed in her mind, a constant reminder of Jean’s own perceived failures, her inability to simply *be* happy, to embrace the easy joy that seemed to elude her like a wisp of smoke. And then there was Jovial. The thought of him sent a confusing jolt through her, a mix of longing and a familiar, icy fear. She picked up a charcoal stick, her fingers tracing the outline of a solitary figure on a fresh sheet of paper. It was a habit she couldn’t break, this need to translate her internal landscape onto the page, to give form to the amorphous ache of loneliness. But today, even the charcoal felt heavy, resistant.
