Chapter 9
The Grumpy Gnomes' Toll
Further on, a bridge is guarded by grumpy gnomes who demand a toll. Paulinha offers them a bright, smooth pebble she found, pleasing them enough to let her pass.
The forest floor, once dappled with gentle sunlight, grew denser, the trees closing in like ancient, silent sentinels. Paulinha, her heart still humming with the echo of the river's last riddle, pushed aside a curtain of hanging moss. She walked for what felt like a long while, the air growing cooler, carrying with it the faint, earthy scent of damp soil and something else, something a little… sharp. It was a smell that tickled the back of her nose and made her think of grumpy old men muttering under their breath. The trees began to thin again, revealing a chasm, a dark gash in the earth that plunged into shadow. Spanning its width was a bridge, cobbled with stones that looked remarkably like oversized, lumpy teeth. And perched on either side of this formidable crossing, sat two figures that made Paulinha pause.
They were gnomes, undeniably gnomes, but not the cheerful, capering sort one might read about in bedtime stories. These gnomes were stout, with beards that bristled like startled hedgehogs and faces set in permanent frowns. Their hats, a deep, mossy green, sagged with an air of profound displeasure, and their little boots were scuffed and mud-caked. They clutched gnarled walking sticks, which they tapped impatiently on the cobblestones, their eyes, like polished obsidian, fixed on Paulinha.
