Chapter 11
The Owl's Perch
At the highest peak, perched on an ancient oak, sits a magnificent Wise Old Owl. His eyes gleam with ancient knowledge as Paulinha approaches.
The wind, a playful sprite itself, whipped Paulinha’s auburn hair around her face as she scrambled the last few feet of the Crystal Peaks. The air thinned with every upward step, carrying with it the faint scent of pine and something else, something ancient and powerful. Below, the world stretched out like a vibrant tapestry, the Whispering Woods a dark green smudge, the winding river a silver ribbon, and the Grumpy Gnomes’ rocky domain a mere pebble. But Paulinha’s gaze was fixed upwards, towards the gnarled, imposing silhouette of an ancient oak that crowned the highest peak. It was said to be the resting place of the Sunstone, and more importantly, the home of the Wise Old Owl.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of anticipation and a whisper of nerves. As she crested the final rise, the oak tree loomed larger than life. Its branches, thick as a giant’s arms, reached towards the sky, adorned with moss that shimmered like emerald dust. And there, perched on a bough that seemed to defy gravity, was the Wise Old Owl. He was magnificent, his feathers the deep, rich brown of fertile earth, tipped with streaks of silver that caught the sunlight. His eyes, large and golden, seemed to hold the wisdom of a thousand dawns. He regarded Paulinha with a stillness that was both unnerving and strangely comforting. He didn’t hoot, didn’t stir, just watched.
