The scent of turpentine and linseed oil was a heady perfume, a stark contrast to the rosewater and lavender that usually clung to Eleanor’s skirts. Julian’s studio, nestled in a quiet mews behind a row of respectable townhouses, was a chaotic symphony of colour and form. Canvases leaned against walls, some finished, others in various states of undress, a testament to a mind that spilled its visions onto linen. Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the organised disarray. Eleanor felt a tremor of something akin to homecoming, a feeling she hadn’t anticipated, not even in her most secret imaginings.
Julian, his shirt smudged with ochre and his dark hair tousled, was engrossed in sketching the curve of a plaster cast. He looked up as she entered, his eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, crinkling at the corners. “Eleanor. You came. I confess, I half-expected to find you barricaded behind a fortress of embroidery hoops and polite refusals.”
A soft laugh escaped her. “And abandon the scent of genius? Never.” She gestured around the room. “It’s… magnificent. A world away from Mother’s drawing-room.”
