The air in their small rented cottage, nestled on the outskirts of a village that had once seemed impossibly distant, was thick with the scent of turpentine and drying oils, a perfume Eleanor had come to cherish. Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the overgrown garden, a space Julian had declared a ‘wild symphony’ and was slowly coaxing into a riot of colour. Inside, however, a different kind of tension hummed. Eleanor watched Julian’s brow furrow, his gaze fixed on the canvas before him, a storm brewing within the vibrant strokes of ultramarine and bruised violet.

“It’s not… capturing the feeling,” he murmured, his voice laced with frustration. He ran a hand through his already dishevelled auburn hair, smearing a streak of ochre across his temple. “The desolation, the quiet ache beneath the beauty.”

Eleanor moved closer, her heart aching with his. She understood the ache. It was the echo of her own past, the ghost of a life unlived, a feeling she had carried for so long before Julian had… illuminated it. She picked up a discarded rag, its edges stiff with dried paint, and gently wiped a smudge of cadmium yellow from his cheek. His eyes, a startling shade of sea-green, met hers, and for a moment, the frustration dissolved, replaced by a shared understanding that ran deeper than words.
