The air in the small cottage, miles from the suffocating grandeur of Ainsworth Manor, hummed with a new kind of life. It was a life Eleanor had only dared to sketch in the hidden margins of her journals, a life painted in hues bolder than the muted silks and stiff brocades of her former existence. Julian’s presence was a constant, vibrant thread woven into the fabric of her days. He moved through their modest rooms with an easy grace, his hands perpetually smudged with charcoal or stained with pigment, his eyes alight with the fire of creation.

Eleanor, too, found herself drawn to the creative impulse. It had begun subtly, a nervous tracing of patterns in the condensation on a windowpane, a desire to capture the fleeting beauty of a wild rose climbing the cottage wall. At first, her attempts were tentative, shy imitations of the world around her. The blush on a ripening apple, the deep green of the moss clinging to the ancient oak outside, the startling blue of a jay’s feather dropped on the path. Julian never corrected, never judged. He would simply watch, a gentle smile playing on his lips, and offer a quiet word of appreciation. “See how the light catches the curve of that petal, Eleanor? It’s not just color; it’s a whisper of the sun.”
