The drawing-room air, usually thick with the scent of beeswax and the hushed rustle of silk, now felt heavy with unspoken words. Eleanor sat by the window, her embroidery hoop forgotten in her lap, her gaze fixed on the rain-slicked cobblestones of the street below. Each drop seemed to mirror the turmoil within her, a constant, insistent drumming against the fragile walls of her composure. Lady Beatrice, across from her, was a study in elegant severity, her needle a sharp, precise punctuation mark to the silence.
“Mr. Cartwright dined with us again last evening, Eleanor,” Lady Beatrice began, her voice smooth as polished ivory, yet edged with an unyielding firmness. “He was most impressed with your pianoforte performance. He mentioned, quite specifically, how your musical talent would be a considerable asset to his household.”
Eleanor’s fingers tightened around the cool metal of the hoop. An asset. Like a well-bred horse or a prized set of china. Her heart gave a small, rebellious flutter. “Did he, Mama?” she replied, her voice barely a whisper.
