Chapter 9
Greg and his friends emerge from the tunnel to find a new shadow creeping toward Greg's garden. They race back and discover the shadow is attacking the flowers, including the newly planted red seed's bloom. Using teamwork and the remaining light from the silver feather, they protect the garden. The Keeper appears, but the red flower's glow weakens him. Mortimer digs a trench to isolate the shadow, and Greg replants the daisy as a symbol of hope. The chapter ends with the full moon rising early and a faint whisper from the red seed promising help.
Greg, Squeaky, Thumper, and Mortimer scrambled out of the tunnel, brushing dirt from their fur. The sun was setting, painting the Whispering Woods in shades of orange and pink. They stood at the edge of the forest, catching their breath.
“We did it,” Squeaky panted. “We planted the seed.”
“But the shadow isn’t gone,” Mortimer said, his low voice heavy. “The Keeper is still there. And look—” He pointed with a thick claw.
