Chapter 20: The Heart of the Forest
Greg and his friends descend into the misty Glade of Echoes for the final confrontation with the shadow serpent. By placing the grey flower on the broken heartstone and speaking words of courage and forgiveness from their hearts, the flower is healed, the serpent is transformed into a gentle creature of light, and the forest is restored. They return home to celebrate with the Keeper and Mortimer, and Greg replants his garden with new flowers.
The mist wrapped around them like a cold blanket as Greg, Squeaky, Thumper, and Mortimer stepped into the Glade of Echoes. The grey flower in the pot glowed steadily, pushing back the fog a little. Every sound they made—a footstep, a breath—bounced back at them from the mist, as if the glade itself was listening.
"Stay close," Greg whispered. "We need to find the heartstone."
Squeaky's tail twitched nervously. "I don't like this. The mist feels... angry."
