Chapter 16: The Chamber of Echoes
Greg and his friends descend into the Chamber of Echoes, where they encounter a massive drum that beats with sorrow. They discover that the drum is the heart of the first mole's regret, and by sharing a memory of forgiveness, they quiet the drum and unlock a path to the forest's true heart.
The spiral staircase wound deeper into the earth, its stone steps worn smooth by time. The drumming grew louder with each step, a deep, steady boom that vibrated through their paws and up into their chests. Greg held the glowing daisy high, its golden light pushing back the thick darkness that pressed in from all sides.
“It sounds like a heartbeat,” Thumper said, her voice trembling slightly.
“A really, really big heartbeat,” Squeaky added, his quick eyes darting around. “Do you think it’s the forest’s heart?”
