Chapter 13
The Heart of the Forest
Greg and his friends fight to stop the poison from destroying the ancient tree. Greg falls into a chasm but is saved by Mortimer. The tree's voice reveals that the shadow’s true source is a broken Heartstone in the Glade of Echoes. They set off on a new quest to find it.
The ground split open with a thunderous crack. Greg stumbled, his paws scrambling for purchase as the chasm widened beneath him. He heard Thumper scream his name, saw Squeaky’s tail flash, and then felt a strong claw grab his arm.
“Hold on!” Mortimer grunted, his thick body braced against the edge. His claws dug deep into the stone, holding Greg steady. “Don’t look down!”
Greg’s heart pounded. Below, the chasm was filled with a dark, swirling mist that hissed and whispered. The poison from the tree had pooled there, bubbling like a black soup. One slip, and he would fall into it.
