Her article, the culmination of weeks of sleepless nights, hushed meetings, and the gnawing fear of being wrong, was finally out there. It was a carefully constructed edifice of facts, figures, and the hushed confessions of a source too afraid to be named. She had laid bare the discrepancies, the phantom accounts, the seemingly innocuous adjustments that, when viewed collectively, painted a picture of systematic financial sleight-of-hand. The warmth of the morning sun did little to dispel the chill that had settled over her.
