The air in Gintaras Mikalauskas’s office was thick with the scent of stale coffee and aged paper, a familiar aroma that usually soothed Agnė. Today, however, it felt suffocating, pressing down on her with the weight of unspoken words. She sat opposite her editor, the worn leather of the chair creaking softly with every shift of her weight. Sunlight, weak and watery for November, slanted through the grimy window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the charged silence.

Gintaras leaned back, his fingers steepled before him, his gaze fixed somewhere beyond Agnė, on the flickering fluorescent lights of the newsroom. His face, usually etched with a kind of weary cynicism, held a flicker of something else – a deep, almost forgotten thoughtfulness. He’d heard Agnė out, her voice barely above a whisper at times, then rising with a fierce conviction as she laid out the discrepancies, the hushed conversations, the sheer wrongness she felt emanating from the heart of ‘Sodra.’ He’d listened, his initial skepticism a tangible presence in the room, a wall of practiced doubt he’d built over years of chasing stories that ultimately led nowhere, or worse, nowhere good.

“You’re sure about this, Agnė?” His voice was low, gravelly, the sound of a man who had seen too many truths tarnished by expediency.
