The chipped enamel mug warmed Agnė’s hands, its faint floral pattern a stark contrast to the sterile grey of her small apartment. Outside, Vilnius was waking up, a city still finding its footing in the new Lithuania, a place of hopeful beginnings and lingering anxieties. Inside, Agnė was adrift in a sea of paper, the scent of old newsprint and stale coffee a familiar comfort. The files on her desk, meticulously organized yet overflowing with scribbled notes and highlighted figures, were the remnants of her latest dive into the murky waters of ‘Sodra.’ The whispers of a pension increase had, at first, seemed like good news, a tangible sign of progress in a nation still grappling with the ghosts of the past. But Agnė, with her journalist’s instinct honed by years of sifting through official pronouncements and deciphering veiled meanings, sensed something more.

She traced the rim of her mug, her gaze distant. It wasn’t just the abstract pursuit of truth that drove her; it was the echoes of her own family’s struggles that resonated with every discrepancy she found, every suspicious ledger entry. She remembered her mother’s hushed conversations with her father, the worry etched deep into the lines around her eyes as they discussed the dwindling value of their savings, the uncertainty of their future. Her grandmother, who had worked her entire life in a factory that had since shuttered its doors, had been promised a comfortable retirement, a reward for years of diligent labour. Instead, she had spent her final years patching worn clothes and stretching meager rations, a quiet testament to broken promises.

These memories, sharp and poignant, were the fuel for Agnė’s tenacity. They were the reason she’d stayed late at the newspaper, poring over documents that others dismissed as too dry, too complex. Gintaras, her editor, a man whose initial skepticism had been a formidable hurdle, had finally relented, a flicker of recognition in his weary eyes when she’d presented her initial findings. He’d seen her dedication, her relentless pursuit of a story that others shied away from. But even he, a veteran of countless investigations, couldn’t fully grasp the depth of Agnė’s personal stake.
