Elena provides Agne with damning documents. The journalist now possesses tangible proof of financial irregularities, but the danger of exposing them looms large.
The air in the small, anonymous cafe tasted of stale coffee and a quiet desperation. Agnė sat across from Elena, the woman’s hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The clatter of dishes and the murmur of conversations seemed to amplify the silence between them, a heavy, charged silence that spoke volumes more than any shouted accusation. Elena’s eyes, usually darting with a nervous energy, were fixed on the chipped Formica tabletop, as if searching for answers in its worn patterns. Agnė, her own heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs, kept her gaze steady, a silent anchor in Elena’s sea of apprehension.
“They are here,” Elena finally whispered, her voice barely audible above the cafe’s low hum. She slid a worn, manila envelope across the table. It felt unnaturally heavy, a tangible embodiment of the secrets it contained. Agnė’s fingers trembled slightly as she reached for it. The paper was rough, familiar, the kind used for official correspondence.
“Are you sure about this, Elena?” Agnė asked, her voice soft, a gentle prod rather than a demand. She understood the immense risk Elena was taking, the sheer courage it required to betray the institution she had served for so long.
