Agnė, though exhausted, felt a strange exhilaration, a quiet satisfaction that settled deep in her bones. The articles, the interviews, the hushed phone calls in dimly lit cafes – it had all culminated in this, a seismic shift within the very foundations of ‘Sodra’. The monolithic institution, once a symbol of stability, now stood exposed, its gilded facade cracked and revealing the rot beneath.
The newspaper office, usually a hive of controlled chaos, felt different. The whispers of suspicion that had once followed Agnė had been replaced by a grudging respect, a palpable awe. Gintaras, her editor, who had once regarded her with a mixture of paternalistic doubt and weary pragmatism, now looked at her with an almost paternal pride. His usual gruffness was softened, replaced by a quiet contemplation.
“They’re calling it the ‘Petrauskaitė Reforms’,” he said one afternoon, leaning back in his creaking chair, a rare smile playing on his lips. He pushed a sheaf of papers across his desk towards her. “Every major paper is running follow-up stories. The parliament is in an uproar. Valionis… well, his face is plastered everywhere, but not in the way he’d like.”
