Evidence mounts against Jonas. His attempts to manipulate the investigation and silence witnesses prove futile as the authorities close in on him.
The air in Gintaras Mikalauskas’s office, usually thick with the comforting scent of old paper and stale coffee, felt charged with a different kind of energy. It was the hum of a trapdoor about to spring, the quiet anticipation before a storm. Agnė sat opposite him, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, the crisp pages of her latest findings spread between them like a battlefield map. Each document, each hastily scribbled note, represented a skirmish won, a piece of the puzzle pulled from the shadows.
“It’s all there, Gintaras,” Agnė said, her voice low but firm, unwavering. “The transfers, the shell companies, the falsified reports. Valionis has been siphoning funds for years, using the pension reform as a smokescreen.”
Gintaras leaned back, his usual weary skepticism momentarily replaced by a flicker of something akin to awe. He ran a hand over his thinning hair, his gaze moving from Agnė’s earnest face to the damning evidence. The initial dismissal, the cautious warnings about overzealousness, all of it seemed a distant memory now. Elena Vasiliauskienė’s carefully delivered package of documents, followed by Agnė’s relentless digging, had chipped away at the edifice of their disbelief, revealing the rot beneath.
