The air in the cramped, smoke-filled office of the newspaper crackled with a tension that had been building for weeks. Agnė sat hunched over her desk, the harsh fluorescent light glinting off her glasses, her fingers flying across the worn keyboard. The scent of stale coffee and cheap cigarettes, usually a comforting backdrop to her work, now felt suffocating, a physical manifestation of the pressure she was under. Gintaras, her editor, paced the narrow aisle between desks, his usual gruff demeanor tinged with a nervous energy. He stopped behind Agnė, his shadow falling over her screen.
“Anything, Agnė?” he asked, his voice a low rumble that barely cut through the din of the newsroom.
Agnė didn’t look up. “I’m close, Gintaras. Elena’s information… it’s like a map. But it’s complex. They’ve been so careful.” She paused, her fingers stilling for a moment. “Years. They’ve been doing this for years.”
