The hushed rustle of the printing press, usually a comforting symphony to Agnė, now sounded like the frantic beating of a trapped bird’s wings. Her article, "Sodra's Shadow: Pensions and the Price of Silence," had hit the stands that morning, and the air in the newsroom crackled with an energy she’d only ever read about in fiction. Gintaras, her editor, sat at his desk, a mug of lukewarm coffee cradled in his hands, his gaze fixed on the front page as if trying to decipher its secrets anew. The headline, bold and uncompromising, was a declaration of war.
Agnė watched him, her stomach a knot of anticipation and dread. She’d poured every ounce of her being into this story, piecing together the fragmented whispers, the hushed warnings, the almost imperceptible discrepancies that Elena Vasiliauskienė, her reluctant informant, had painstakingly revealed. The carefully constructed facade of Sodra, the benevolent guardian of Lithuania’s future, had begun to show its first hairline fractures, and Agnė had driven a chisel into them.
"Well," Gintaras finally said, his voice raspy, "it's out there." He didn't look at her, his eyes still scanning the dense paragraphs, the stark figures she had so meticulously laid bare. The article detailed the subtle, yet significant, diversions of pension funds, the opaque shell companies, the carefully orchestrated delays in promised increases that seemed to benefit a select few rather than the masses they were meant to serve. It hinted, without outright accusation, at the architect of this grand deception: Jonas Valionis, the charismatic and seemingly untouchable deputy director of Sodra.
