Elara traced the worn spine of a tome, the scent of aged parchment and dried ink a familiar comfort. Master Theron’s library was her sanctuary, a place where the cacophony of her early years – the fleeting faces, the hushed arguments, the gnawing emptiness – faded into a distant hum. Here, order reigned, meticulously cataloged and bound. She was a creature of this new order, her past a tattered cloak she’d shed, or so she told herself.

Her fingers brushed against a section of shelving that felt… wrong. Less solid. A subtle give when she pressed. Curiosity, a familiar spark, flared. She pushed harder, a faint grinding sound echoing in the vast quiet. A seam appeared, then widened, revealing not wood, but darkness. A hidden passage. Her heart gave a little leap, a nervous flutter she hadn’t felt since discovering the hidden compartment in her childhood hiding place, the one that held only a single, smooth grey stone.

The passage was narrow, the air within cool and damp, carrying the faint, earthy smell of long-undisturbed stone. She fetched a lantern, its flickering glow casting dancing shadows ahead. Master Theron was engrossed in his celestial charts, his brow furrowed in concentration, oblivious to her clandestine exploration. He would disapprove, of course, but the allure of the unknown was a powerful siren song, especially when it promised a whisper of the past, a past he so revered and sought to preserve.
