The scent of sawdust and linseed oil was Liam’s constant companion, a familiar perfume that clung to his clothes and his hair like a second skin. It was the smell of his father’s workshop, a place brimming with half-finished carvings, vibrant pigments, and the echo of laughter that could, at times, feel a little too loud, a little too hollow. Today, however, the usual cheerful din was muted. A heavy silence had settled over the small room, thick and suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic scraping of Liam’s father’s chisel against a block of unyielding oak.

Liam watched him, a knot tightening in his stomach. His father, a man whose spirit was as boundless as a summer sky, was hunched over his work, his brow furrowed in a way Liam rarely saw. The jovial spark in his eyes seemed dimmed, replaced by a weary resignation. The artisan’s hands, usually so nimble and sure, moved with a hesitant uncertainty. It was the irresponsibility of those hands, Liam knew, that had led them to this precipice. The whispered conversations he’d overheard between his father and the town’s moneylender, the increasingly desperate pleas from suppliers, the way his father would wave away any mention of finances with a dismissive chuckle – it all coalesced into a grim reality.

“Father,” Liam began, his voice barely a whisper, the words catching in his throat.
