The air in the small church hall was thick with the scent of wilting frangipani and the murmur of earnest conversation. Reverend John Gerel, his face etched with the gentle wisdom of many years spent in service, surveyed the small group gathered after the Sunday service. They were a mix of seasoned believers and those new to the fold, their faces alight with a mixture of curiosity and, for some, a lingering uncertainty about the matter of giving. He had just finished his sermon, a gentle but firm exploration of how their faith in Christ should naturally overflow into generosity, and now he felt it was time to delve deeper, to paint a clearer picture of why they should give.

“My brothers and sisters,” he began, his voice a warm embrace, “we have spoken about the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of giving, how the Lord has guided us from the days of the Old Covenant to the freedom of the New. I want us to understand the beautiful, rich tapestry of reasons that God lays on our hearts when He calls us to share what He has so generously given us.”

She had a worried frown that often creased her brow when the topic of money arose, and he prayed that today’s words would bring her peace. Beside her, old Manua, his hands gnarled from a lifetime of working the land, leaned forward, his eyes fixed on the Reverend. He had always been a generous soul, but perhaps he, too, was seeking a deeper affirmation of his spirit.
