Chapter 8
The Burning Buff
Mark feels an unnatural surge of energy, a powerful 'buff' that makes him feel invincible. However, a strange, burning sensation accompanies it, a subtle warning of the Ghost's risky intervention.
The world, to Mark, had always been a series of finish lines and the gnawing dissatisfaction of falling short. But today was different. Today, a wildfire raged within him, not of frustration, but of pure, unadulterated power. He felt it first as a hum, a low thrumming beneath his skin, like a thousand tiny engines revving in unison. Then, it bloomed. A wave of incandescent energy washed over him, chasing away the lingering fatigue from the Ghost’s brutal training sessions. His muscles, usually aching and protesting, felt taut and springy, ready to unleash a torrent of speed and strength.
He flexed his bicep, and it bulged with a definition he’d only dreamed of, a sculpted monument to his newfound might. He took a tentative step, and the ground seemed to recoil, his footfall lighter, faster. A grin, wide and triumphant, stretched across his face. This was it. This was the edge, the unfair advantage he’d craved. The Fitness Ghost, in her infinite, terrifying wisdom, had finally delivered.
But as the initial euphoria surged, a subtle dissonance began to creep in. It was a prickling sensation, like a million tiny needles dancing across his skin, concentrated around his limbs. He looked down at his arms, expecting to see a visible manifestation of this newfound power, but there was nothing. Yet, the feeling persisted, a persistent, almost igniting warmth that wasn't entirely pleasant. It felt less like the gentle warmth of a sunbeam and more like the searing heat of a forge.
