The air in Mark’s cramped apartment crackled with an unseen energy, thick and humming like a thousand trapped cicadas. Dust motes, usually content to drift lazily in the afternoon sunbeams, now danced with frantic purpose, swirling around the hastily drawn chalk circle on the floor. Mark, panting slightly from the sheer exertion of performing the ritual, his T-shirt clinging damply to his back, felt a tremor run through the floorboards. He’d done it. He’d actually done it.

Then, the light. Not a gentle dawn, but a searing, blinding flash that forced Mark to shield his eyes. It pulsed, a vibrant emerald that seemed to suck the very color from the room, leaving behind a stark, almost monochrome reality. When the glare subsided, Mark blinked, his vision swimming, and saw her.

She coalesced from the lingering luminescence, a figure of impossible grace and intimidating power. Tall, impossibly so, she seemed to fill the space between the floor and ceiling with her presence. Her form was fluid, like smoke given substance, shimmering with an inner light that mirrored the initial flash. Her skin was the color of polished obsidian, smooth and unblemished, and her eyes… her eyes were pools of molten gold, intelligent and ancient, holding a spark of amusement that sent a shiver down Mark’s spine. She wore what looked like a sleek, form-fitting athletic suit, woven from threads of starlight, that hinted at muscles sculpted by eons of perfect movement.
