The air in the back room of the abandoned bookstore always tasted of dust and forgotten stories. It was here, amidst the scent of decaying paper and the low hum of Marcus’s makeshift comms equipment, that I felt the familiar tightening in my chest. Marcus, his face a roadmap of weary vigilance, sat across from me, his gaze as sharp and unwavering as a scalpel. He didn’t yell, he didn’t threaten. That was never his way. Instead, his words were like carefully placed stones, each one building a wall between me and the life I was starting to crave.
“He’s a complication, Elara,” Marcus stated, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. He didn’t need to specify who ‘he’ was. Liam. The name itself felt like a secret I was desperately trying to keep, a fragile bloom I was nurturing in the shadows of my existence. “A beautiful, dangerous complication.”
I clenched my fists, the faint, telltale glow beneath my skin flaring for a moment before I forced it back down. “He doesn’t know anything, Marcus. He’s… normal. He’s just a person.” The words felt hollow even to my own ears. What was normal anymore? My life had been a constant scramble for survival for so long, a tightrope walk over an abyss of government hunters and watchful eyes. Liam was a breath of fresh air, a glimpse of a world I’d only dared to dream of.
