The air in the small apartment was thick with a silence that pressed in on me, heavier than any cloak. Outside, the city hummed its indifferent tune, a million lives unfolding, oblivious to the seismic shift happening within these four walls. Liam sat across from me, his face a mask of stunned disbelief, his eyes, usually so clear and warm, now clouded with a confusion that mirrored the tempest in my own chest. The faint, ethereal glow of my veins, usually a secret I kept hidden beneath layers of fabric and forced smiles, was now a beacon, undeniable, broadcasting the impossible truth.
He’d seen it. Not the subtle shimmer I sometimes felt under my skin, but the full, vibrant luminescence, like rivers of moonlight flowing beneath my flesh, when I’d instinctively conjured a shield to deflect a falling piece of debris from a nearby construction site. A freak accident, I’d tried to stammer, a trick of the light. But his gaze had held mine, piercing through the flimsy facade, and then, driven by a desperate, foolish impulse, I’d let it bloom. I’d shown him.
“Elara…” His voice was a raw whisper, barely audible. He reached out a hand, then pulled it back as if burned. “What… what was that?”
