The stale air of the safe house clung to me like a shroud, thick with the unspoken anxieties of those who lived in perpetual shadow. Marcus had called an emergency meeting, his voice a low rumble over the comms, devoid of its usual measured calm. That, in itself, was enough to send a tremor through the already frayed nerves of our cell. Liam, bless his oblivious heart, thought I was just working late at the archive, a plausible lie that felt like a betrayal every time I spoke it. He was too good, too pure, to be dragged into this mess.
The flickering gaslight cast long, dancing shadows across the faces gathered in the cramped room. Each one was a testament to the life we’d been forced to carve out – furtive, fearful, and fundamentally broken. My own hands were clasped tight in my lap, the faint, almost imperceptible luminescence of my veins a constant, unwelcome reminder of what I was, and why I was here.
Marcus stood at the head of the makeshift table, his usual composed demeanor replaced by a grim tension. He cleared his throat, the sound unnaturally loud in the suffocating silence. "We have a problem," he began, his gaze sweeping over each of us. "A significant one."
