The stale air of the safe house clung to me like a shroud, a familiar scent of dust and desperation. Marcus had called an emergency meeting, his voice tight with an urgency that prickled the hairs on my arms. The usual clandestine whispers and furtive glances were amplified tonight, a palpable tension humming beneath the surface. Liam was a ghost in my thoughts, his easy smile a stark contrast to the grim faces assembled around the rough-hewn table. Every moment I spent away from him felt like a betrayal, a further step into the shadows that threatened to swallow us both.
"Elara," Marcus began, his eyes, usually sharp and assessing, now held a flicker of something I couldn't quite decipher – weariness, perhaps, or a deeper, more troubling resolve. "We have new intelligence. Thorne's network is tightening. They've identified several potential nexus points, places where residual energy signatures from manifestations have been detected."
My hands tightened into fists under the table. Nexus points. A chilling term for places where I, or others like me, had been forced to exist, to create, to survive. "What does that mean, Marcus?" I asked, my voice betraying none of the tremor I felt inside.
