Jhrean’s laughter, usually a sunbeam cutting through the haze of their senior year anxieties, felt brittle tonight, like thin ice about to crack. He sat across from Cyenrhi at their usual corner table in the dimly lit diner, the air thick with the scent of stale coffee and the unspoken. Her eyes, wide and perpetually searching, met his, and he saw the familiar flicker of confusion, the subtle tightening of her brow. He knew, with a certainty that settled like a stone in his gut, that his carefully constructed façade was starting to crumble.
“You keep staring at your coffee, Cyenrhi,” he said, his voice a low rumble, a deliberate attempt to coax her out of the labyrinth of her own thoughts. “Is it planning to run away?”
She blinked, a slow, deliberate movement, and a faint smile touched her lips. “Perhaps. It’s seen too much of my existential dread today.” Her voice was a soft melody, tinged with a familiar melancholy. “You haven’t touched your fries, Jhrean. Are they plotting an escape too?”
