Chapter 6
The Forgotten Playground
The shared dream points to a specific location: an abandoned playground on the edge of town. Driven by a strange compulsion, the four friends visit. A forgotten memory surfaces for Cyenrhi, a fragment of a childhood incident, linked to a sense of shared peril.
The air in the classroom hummed with the low thrum of anticipation, a collective exhaling as the final bell shrieked its release. June, the month of hesitant beginnings and the slow bloom of summer, had settled over the town like a warm, heavy cloak. For Cyenrhi, it was a month that always carried a peculiar weight, a subtle shift that mirrored the churning in her own overthinking mind. Today, however, the usual anxieties were amplified, a dissonant chord struck by the shared, unsettling dream that had woven itself into their nights.
It had started as fragments, whispers in the dark. A swing set, creaking with an unseen rider. A slide, slick with a phantom dew. A carousel, its painted horses frozen mid-gallop. Then, the images had coalesced, sharpened into a singular, insistent vision: an abandoned playground, overgrown and forgotten, on the very edge of town. The dream had been so vivid, so shared, that waking had felt like a rude interruption, leaving behind a residue of unease that clung to them like the morning mist.
“It’s still there, isn’t it?” Roxzie’s voice, usually a bright, clear bell, was hushed, almost reverent, as they walked the familiar path towards the dusty town square. Her pragmatic gaze, usually fixed on the horizon of her future, was now turned inwards, searching for answers in the shared landscape of their slumber.
