The air in the library, usually a sanctuary of hushed reverence, felt thick with an almost palpable tension. Dust motes danced in the shafts of late afternoon sun that slanted through the tall, arched windows, illuminating the quiet desperation etched onto each of their faces. Cyenrhi traced the worn leather of a forgotten tome, her fingers seeking a familiar comfort that eluded her. The dreams, those insidious whispers that had begun to weave through their sleep, were no longer confined to the shadows of their minds. They bled into their waking hours, staining their thoughts with a disquieting premonition.
“It’s like… like we’re standing at the edge of a precipice,” Cyenrhi murmured, her voice barely a breath against the vast silence. “And every step we take, we’re afraid it’s the wrong one, the one that sends us tumbling.”
Jhrean, seated across from her, his usual playful smirk replaced by a thoughtful frown, leaned forward. “But what if the precipice isn’t a fall, Cyenrhi? What if it’s a launchpad?” He met her gaze, his eyes, usually alight with mischief, now held a steady, unwavering intensity. “What if the ‘what if’s’ aren’t warnings of what *will* happen, but invitations to choose what *could*?”
