The air in the garden that evening had been thick with the scent of honeysuckle and the unspoken weight of a thousand possibilities. Now, as Liam’s hand found mine, a different kind of weight settled, not heavy, but grounding. It was the weight of truth, finally acknowledged, finally embraced. The moonlight, previously a spotlight for our staged affection, now seemed to soften, bathing us in a gentle glow that felt less like performance and more like permission.

“So,” Liam’s voice was a low rumble, a comforting vibration against my palm, “we’re doing this then.”

I squeezed his hand, the gesture less a rehearsal and more a declaration. “We’re doing this.” The words felt fragile, precious, like spun glass. The charade, the carefully constructed illusion we’d so expertly woven, had been a beautiful, intricate lie. But lying had a way of revealing the truth, didn’t it?
