Each footstep echoed unnervingly, a fragile sound swallowed by the immensity of the darkness that pressed in from all sides. They moved as a hesitant tide, their flickering torchlight carving ephemeral islands of visibility in the encroaching gloom.
Leopoldo, ever the pragmatist, led the vanguard. His eyes, accustomed to the intricate workings of gears and circuits, now scanned the rough-hewn walls, searching for patterns, for anomalies, for anything that spoke of purpose or design beyond the raw chaos of nature. He ran a gloved hand over a patch of slick, dark stone, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Remarkable mineral composition,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the silence. “High concentrations of… something I don’t recognize. It almost hums with latent energy.”
Behind him, Alterra’s gaze was fixed not on the walls, but on the faces of those who followed. She saw the fear, a cold, creeping tendril that threatened to paralyze them, and she countered it with a forced serenity, her posture radiating a confidence she didn’t entirely feel. Her hand rested on the hilt of the crude blade she’d fashioned, a constant, reassuring weight. “Keep close,” she urged, her voice a steady beacon. “The spirits of this place are ancient. They do not welcome disturbance.”
