The mouth of the cave exhaled a breath of cool, mineral-scented air, a shocking relief after weeks under the Ochre Sun. Sacagawea went first, her bare feet silent on the stone, one hand raised behind her in a signal the others had learned to obey without question. Leopoldo followed, cradling Degassi against his shoulder, her fever radiating through the thin fabric of her coat. Alterra came next, murmuring something under her breath that might have been a prayer or might simply have been a way of keeping her voice steady. Genghis Khan brought up the rear, obsidian blade drawn, his eyes cutting into every shadow as though daring it to move first. Joan walked beside him, silent, her borrowed club held loose but ready.
The phosphorescent moss Sacagawea had promised grew in trailing curtains along the walls, pulsing faintly, like something breathing in its sleep. It cast the cave in a pale green light that made all of their faces look drowned.
