The Ochre Sun of Osvald beat down with a relentless fury, baking the already parched earth and shimmering the air into a hazy mirage. Dust, fine as powdered bone, coated everything – the tattered remnants of their former lives, the roughspun garments they now wore, and the very skin of the desperate souls huddled in the meager shade of a colossal, petrified tree. Survival, a raw and untamed beast, had become their sole, consuming obsession.

Leopoldo, his usually pristine hands now stained with grime and the faint iridescence of some unknown mineral, meticulously adjusted a crude contraption of scavenged metal and sinew. It was a water condenser, a testament to his desperate ingenuity, and for the past cycle of the twin moons, it had yielded a mere thimbleful of brackish liquid each dawn. He grunted, a low, guttural sound of frustration, as a particularly strong gust of wind threatened to dislodge a vital piece of his creation. “This infernal planet,” he muttered, his voice raspy from thirst and disuse. “It offers no respite, no easy answers.”

Alterra, her eyes, usually alight with unwavering conviction, now held a weariness that even her deep faith struggled to mask. She sat cross-legged beside a small, flickering fire, coaxing life from a handful of dried, brittle stalks. The scent of their meager ration – a paste made from ground roots and a few protein-rich grubs – was barely enough to quell the gnawing emptiness in their bellies. “The Great Weaver spins her threads, Leopoldo,” she said, her voice soft but firm. “We are but threads within her tapestry. We must endure.”
