The air, thick with the cloying scent of decay and something vaguely metallic, pressed in on them. Above, the colossal trunk of the World Tree loomed, its bark a tapestry of gnarled roots and clinging, phosphorescent moss. This was their new challenge, their only hope. The previous days had been a brutal symphony of survival: the chilling "Rain of Flesh," the terrifying onslaught of the planet's indigenous predators in "The Attack," and the desperate, fleeting sanctuary of the World Tree itself, a place that offered both sustenance and a terrifying vertical obstacle.
Leopoldo, as always, was the first to articulate the obvious, his voice a low hum of calculation. "The lower levels are depleted. We've scavenged what we can. To survive, to even consider escape, we must ascend." He gestured with a charcoal-stained finger towards the impossible height. "The canopy, if it can be called that, is our only viable path."
Alterra, her eyes fixed on the swirling, alien constellations visible through the gaps in the colossal branches, nodded slowly. "The signs are clear. This path was shown to me in a dream. We climb. We reach for the sky." Her conviction, though unwavering, held a tremor of the doubt she so carefully concealed. The sheer scale of the undertaking was enough to unnerve even the most devout.
