Cracks in the Facade
Amara finds herself genuinely drawn to Chidi. Her carefully constructed joke starts to crumble as real emotions surface. She fears her fake love story will lead to real heartbreak.
Amara dusted flour from her apron, the faint scent of vanilla and sugar clinging to her like a second skin. The afternoon sun, usually a welcome guest in her cozy bakery, felt almost too bright today, illuminating the tiny motes of dust dancing in the air and, to Amara’s mind, the growing cracks in her own carefully constructed facade. Chidi. The name echoed in her head, a soft melody that was beginning to drown out the usual cacophony of her friends’ matchmaking schemes and her own cynical pronouncements about Naija love.
He was an architect, she knew. Solid. Grounded. Someone who built things that lasted. Unlike the flimsy, fleeting connections she’d been bracing herself for. He hadn't talked about her baking empire, or her potential to be a trophy wife, or how her laugh was "so infectious, darling." He’d asked about her process. About the science behind a perfect sourdough rise, about the psychology of comfort food. He’d listened, truly listened, his dark eyes thoughtful as he traced the rim of his teacup.
And then there was the way he’d smiled, a slow, genuine thing that reached his eyes and crinkled the corners. It wasn’t the practiced, flashy smile of the men who’d paraded through her life in a blur of awkward silences and forced compliments. It was a quiet invitation, a shared secret.
