The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the scent of decay and something else, something metallic and sharp, like fear. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. Beside me, Megan’s hand was a steady weight on my arm, her breath coming in shallow puffs. We’d followed Elias’s whispered directions here, to the heart of whatever Silas Thorne and his shadowy organization had been hiding. This was it. The end of the line.

The warehouse was vast, a skeletal husk of industry where shadows clung to every girder and machinery rusted into grotesque sculptures. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows. Elias had said Thorne would be here, meeting with the others. The ones who wanted Lilly silenced, permanently. And he’d said Lilly would be here too. A trap, perhaps. Or a desperate plea.

“Are you sure about this, Iris?” Megan’s voice was a low murmur, laced with a tension that mirrored my own. Her usual playful banter was replaced by a grim focus. I could feel the tremor in her fingers, a testament to the high stakes.
