The morning light crept through the curtains, casting long shadows across the bedroom. Dale lay still, listening to Skye's soft breathing beside him. Rusty, the stray dog, had somehow squeezed onto the foot of the bed, his tail thumping a lazy rhythm against the quilt. The commode stood in the corner, its polished wood gleaming, as if it had absorbed the secrets of the night and was now ready to give them up.
Dale reached for the locket on the nightstand, its gold surface cool against his fingers. He opened it again, studying the faces of the man and woman. Margaret Holloway had kept this secret for sixty years, he thought. And now it had found us.
Skye stirred, her hand finding his. "You're up early."
