Chapter 15
Chapter 15: The Shape of Tomorrow
In the weeks after bringing Margaret home, Dale and Skye navigate the rhythms of new parenthood, their bond deepening through sleepless nights and quiet joys. Chloe's innocent observations, Dr. Vance's wisdom, and Marcus Thorne's unexpected return with a life-changing commission from a mysterious collector force Dale and Skye to confront their past and envision their future together. A romantic evening in the restored workshop reaffirms their commitment, while a surprising connection to Margaret Holloway's lost love sets the stage for a new chapter in their lives.
The first night home was a blur of feedings, diaper changes, and the soft, rhythmic sound of Margaret's breathing. Dale woke every two hours, not from the baby's cries—Skye insisted on nursing in the rocking chair—but from a primal need to check that she was still alive. He would tiptoe to the crib, place a hand on her chest, feel the rise and fall, and exhale. Each time, Skye would murmur from the bed, "She's fine, love. Come back to bed." And he would, wrapping himself around her, his heart still racing.
By the third week, a fragile routine had emerged. Skye took the night shift, her body attuned to Margaret's hunger cues. Dale took the early morning, from four to seven, letting Skye sleep while he bottle-fed expressed milk and talked to Margaret about the world. He told her about the oak tree in the backyard, about the birds that visited the feeder, about the rocking chair that had started everything. Margaret would stare at him with those pale blue eyes, her tiny hand wrapped around his finger, and Dale would feel a love so vast it terrified him.
"You're going to be a poet," he told her one morning, as the sun painted the nursery in shades of gold. "Your mother has the soul of a healer, and I have the hands of a restorer. But you—you have the eyes of someone who sees everything. You'll be the one who puts it all into words."
