The midday sun beat down on the dusty marketplace, a symphony of vibrant colors and boisterous calls. Omar, his face flushed with the heat and the sheer exhilaration of it all, navigated through the throng, his senses alive with the unfamiliar scents of spices and roasted meats. He’d spent the morning haggling for a beautifully woven rug, a small victory that filled him with a quiet pride. Now, he was on his way to meet Layla, his local contact, at a small tea stall tucked away in a shaded alcove.
He found her already there, a serene presence amidst the chaos. Her dark eyes, usually alight with warmth, held a hint of melancholy today as she stirred a tiny cup of mint tea. Omar slid onto the stool beside her, offering a weary but contented smile.
“Layla! I was starting to think I’d gotten lost again,” he said, his voice a touch hoarse from the dry air.
