Lost passports and fumbled greetings were distant memories, replaced by a steady, determined stride. Professor Finch’s words, “See the soul of a place, Omar, not just its postcard image,” echoed in his mind, a constant, gentle reminder. He had seen the postcard images, of course, the dazzling Koutoubia Mosque, the vibrant Djemaa el-Fna square at dusk. But now, he sought something deeper, the quiet conversations in shaded courtyards, the shared laughter over steaming tagines, the unspoken stories etched into the faces of the local artisans.
He was searching for a specific leatherworker, a craftsman whose reputation for intricate designs had traveled further than Omar had anticipated. Layla, his friend from the previous leg of his journey, had given him the name and the general location, but the souk was a beast that delighted in swallowing directions whole. He turned a corner, the air suddenly thick with the metallic clang of coppersmiths, and there, silhouetted against a shaft of sunlight filtering through a reed-covered roof, was a figure he recognized with a jolt of unease.
