Stuart stood at the crossroads, not of a dusty country lane, but of his own fractured past. The air, usually thick with the scent of damp wool and stale biscuits from his usual haunt, the ‘Crusty Loaf’ café, now hummed with an electric tension that prickled his skin. He’d been chasing shadows for weeks, ever since the spilled milk incident, or rather, the memory of it, had catapulted him back into a life he’d long thought neatly filed away. Each flashback, a jagged shard of glass, had chipped away at the smooth, placid surface of his contented grumpiness, revealing a roiling undercurrent of unanswered questions.

Eleanor Vance. The name itself conjured a faint, almost forgotten scent of lavender and a hint of mischief. He’d found her, after a frankly ridiculous amount of social media sleuthing that had left him feeling like a digital Peeping Tom, living in a quaint cottage on the outskirts of town, a place where roses climbed trellises with an almost defiant exuberance.

He clutched the worn leather of his briefcase, a nervous habit he hadn’t indulged since his ill-fated attempt at public speaking in ’88. The cottage door creaked open before he even had a chance to knock, as if Eleanor had been expecting him, or perhaps, just the universe had finally decided to cooperate.
